Every morning, my insomnia that I normally have was still kicking in. I was up before sunrise, granted it was like late morning in Denver where I’m used to though. The cool part is that I got to experience the sunrise over the beach out the back of our cabin.
That day, we went to meet with a friend of ours who recently moved to Hawaii, Matt. Matt works for the Boy Scouts of America, and we knew each other from our days of working at Philmont. He took us out to lunch. It was good getting to see him for a little while. He had been living in Alaska the past few years, and we don’t get to see him often. After lunch we went to Hanauma Bay. Along the way we stopped at a scenic overlook.
Hanauma Bay is a nature preserve that was created by a volcano. The big attraction here is snorkeling. I had never been before, but it was a lot of fun. There is a coral reef in the bay that you can swim around as well that has lots of cool fish. Wendy was dying to see a sea turtle. We finally got to see one while we were snorkeling here. I think its a fun way to swim, its much less effort to breathe than normal swimming. We didn’t get to take our camera down there as we didn’t want the camera to get stolen or messed up.
Afterward, we drove towards Honolulu. We wound up at Waikiki beach. Boy, was it crowded. I’m glad we didn’t spend much of our trip here. We finally found a place to park and went for a walk along the main strip. We stopped at Jimmy Buffet’s Restaurant to eat.
Food was tasty. I had more coconut battered shrimp. Man, that stuff is good. We then drove back to our cabin.
