The BIG Change

Ramsey set off for the river, he said he could hear the fish calling his name. We set a rendezvous time, and Chris and I set off for Four Mile Falls. The scenery was beautiful. Chris was really enjoying it as he hasn’t hiked in the Rocky Mountains in a long time.

After a little bit of hiking we came to Four Mile Falls. It wasn’t nearly as impressive as I had remembered it. The difference being that when I was there last, it was during the spring thaw which meant there was lots of water. This was the fall, so there wasn’t nearly as much water running off the falls. It was still pretty though.

We even encountered a few Grouse as we got closer.

A little bit closer view of the falls. I wish there was more water in them. I have other pictures from longer ago with more water.

Chris and I hiked up and around underneath the falls for a little while. It wasn’t more than a trickle coming down off of there, but I wasn’t able to get up in there the last time I had hiked this as there was still lots of snow then. When Bill and I had hiked it in late May of 1998, this was as far as we could take the trail as it as covered in snow and we lost it. Bill and I spent a night here at a little campsite near the foot of the falls. Chris and I found the area actually. There was a smaller waterfall up the trail a little farther.

We ran into a few people on the hike who were very friendly. Other than that, there was very little contact with civilization. Which is what I like about hiking in Wilderness Areas. One of the hikers we talked to had done the loop and he told us that this part of the hike was the most scenic, so we were satisfied with how far we had hiked. My cold was only bothering me slightly, but thankfully it never got really bad. Thank you zicam.
